Finders Keepers by Stephen King (2016)

  • by

After finishing Revival, I felt the urge to further explore the Stephen King universe. This led me to pick up Finders Keepers, an indirect sequel to Mr. Mercedes (which I didn’t read yet). Stephen King is an author who needs no introduction, capable of evoking fear, deep reflection, and a genuine literary addiction in his readers. Finders Keepers promised to once again delve into the tortured minds of fascinating characters while exploring the power of fiction.

Synopsis

John Rothstein, a successful author, decides to retire and stops writing, plunging millions of readers into despair, especially those attached to his character, Jimmy Gold. Morris Bellamy, a fanatic of Rothstein’s work, cannot bear that the story of his favorite character ends so abruptly. In a fit of rage, he murders the author, not only to steal his fortune but also to seize his precious unpublished notebooks. However, the crime does not bring him the happiness he expected. Stephen King here revisits the theme of obsession, previously explored in Misery, paying tribute to the power of fiction, capable of inspiring the best and the worst in readers.

My impressions

Finders Keepers stands out with an emotional intensity that does not leave the reader indifferent. It is particularly true due to the presence of children at the heart of the plot. I felt strong empathy for Pete and his little sister, trembling at the thought of something happening to them. Stephen King once again creates a villain who is as much to be hated as understood. Morris Bellamy’s frustration over Jimmy Gold’s abandonment by his creator is palpable, though his actions are terrifying. One cannot help but wonder what one would feel if a similar situation befell the author himself.

The story, though slow to start, proves to be fluid and captivating, with a particularly well-executed ending. For fans of thrillers, Finders Keepers is a must-read, whether they are familiar with Mr. Mercedes or not. The tension gradually builds, the theme is profound and thought-provoking, while also being incredibly entertaining.

However, some readers may be slightly disappointed, particularly those expecting more sustained suspense throughout the book. It is true that Finders Keepers does not always reach the heights of King’s best works… But it remains a fascinating read! The author skillfully juggles themes dear to him, especially the power of fiction, while paying homage to the great authors of the last century. This novel, while not the best of his career, demonstrates Stephen King’s inexhaustible ability to renew himself and surprise.

In sum, Finders Keepers is a work that oscillates between deep reflection and guilty pleasure. And despite a few slow parts, it manages to captivate the reader until the very last page. Stephen King remains true to himself, offering a reading experience rich in emotions, tension, and surprises.
