Where to eat breakfast in Los Angeles?

  • by

You are going to visit Los Angeles and plan to stay there for a few days … This is the opportunity to taste some American specialties in an Angelino atmosphere. I found two places that are, in my opinion, essential for a successful breakfast!

The Original Pantry Cafe

A restaurant open since 1924, and which has never closed since, The Original Pantry Cafe is now owned by former Los Angeles mayor Richard Riordan. Many celebrities have already come to eat here. This place is often mentioned in the series of novels “Harry Bosch” by Michael Connelly that I really like.

The welcome is not very warm but effective. The plates served are particularly well stocked. When I went there, in 2019, I selected a breakfast based on pancakes, scrambled eggs, sautéed potatoes, and bacon; all accompanied by a coffee. Three plates were served to me for this. The quantities are indeed astronomical, but it’s really good! This is probably the only time in the United States that I have not finished a plate.

Nick’s Cafe

Nick’s Cafe is my favorite breakfast spot in LA. I discovered an article in LA Weekly which mentioned it in 2014, before my first road trip in the USA.

It was with a bit of surprise that I went there in September 2014: there is very little space inside, it does not look very clean, and yet it is very well known and renowned here in LA. We expect to meet cops after their night patrol or before taking their duty, and very few tourists (I didn’t see any…). We sit on a stool, and someone takes our order. “Famous Ham N Eggs” is the only dish I have tried, twice in five years and has remained, for me, one of the best breakfasts I have eaten in America. There too, the portions are generous and it is easy to hold until evening with only that in the belly!
